Why Email No Longer Rules…

Email has had a good run as king of communications. But its reign is over.
In its place, a new generation of services is starting to take hold—services like Twitter and Facebook and countless others vying for a piece of the new world. And just as email did more than a decade ago, this shift promises to profoundly rewrite the way we communicate—in ways we can only begin to imagine.
We all still use email, of course. But email was better suited to the way we used to use the Internet—logging off and on, checking our messages in bursts. Now, we are always connected, whether we are sitting at a desk or on a mobile phone. The always-on connection, in turn, has created a host of new ways to communicate that are much faster than email, and more fun.

I don't see email as being a thing of the past. There are still far too many uses and conveniences to it. While other technology is racing ahead and being created, it can often be overwhelming for someone non-savvy. There are also far too many choices about what vehicles to use for communication for so many of us. Yes, I email, facebook, tweet and blog, -some on a daily basis and some when I feel like it. I control my communication not the other way around. I also see a trend emerging with the desire and need for face to face or vocal communication...perhaps human touch is still a need above the anonymous mode of the wired networks-or is it an enhancement?

Thanks Skye for making the effort to also comment on the blog. We are living in a very exciting time but a challenging time as well with all these changes. I also personally used "face to face" visual online asynchronous applications (through the use of a webcam) which is very much like you say bringing back a "human touch" to the virtual conversation. It's our responsibility to practice (play with) these new tools and to see how they can be used effectively @ CCCC.
